Chiropractic for Anxiety and Depression

Posted by on Aug 20, 2015 in Blog | 0 comments

In my clinical experience I have seen many patients who are suffering from depression and/or anxiety.  According to CAMH, 20% of Canadians will personally experience a mental illness in their lifetime and it affects people of all ages, educational and income levels, and cultures. Anxiety is an emotional state characterized by an unpleasant state of inner turmoil, often accompanied by nervous behavior.  People with depression can feel sad, empty, hopeless, guilty, irritable and lose interest in activities that were once pleasurable. I’ve seen how debilitating these states can be for my patients and how detrimental it can be to their overall health.  I have also seen that chiropractic can help moderate the severity of these conditions, helping them engage in life and rekindle an enjoyment in daily living. A study conducted by the Journal of Vertebral Subluxation showed that over 70% of participants showed a “marked improvement” with chiropractic treatment to the upper cervical spine (neck). A total of fifteen participants were chosen for the study (all with a history of depression). Each participant was diagnosed with an upper cervical misalignment using postural analysis and precise x-rays. All participants were provided with a questionnaire prior to receiving a chiropractic adjustment and were asked to fill out a second questionnaire two weeks after. An astounding 73% of participants scored a marked improvement with their questionnaire score, with 13% showing only slight improvement. Sometimes these emotional states are a reaction to or related with the frustration of living with chronic pain.  Recent research helps shed light on how and why patients who receive chiropractic care report an improvement in their depressive state. Gay et al.  (2014), investigated the immediate changes in the connectivity between the areas of the brain which process and modulate the pain experience.  This pain processing network of neurons is closely linked to the regions associated with the sensation of mood and emotion.  24 participants with low back pain had functional MRIs of their brains before and after receiving chiropractic manipulative therapy.  Based on multiple outcome measures the results reveal that the adjustments create an immediate and beneficial effect on the functional connectivity of multiple parts of the brain which modulate the pain experience. Chiropractic is a natural, drug free approach to health that should be considered when dealing with mental health issues like anxiety or depression, especially for individuals having little results with counseling and/or drug therapy. If you, or someone you know suffers from anxiety or depression consider adding chiropractic to your treatment strategy. Crossfit + Chiro – The Missing Link

Posted by on Apr 25, 2015 in Blog | 0 comments

Over the past few months I’ve noticed an influx of Crossfit Athletes coming into my practice.  I’m impressed by the dedication and devotion these Crossfitters have to push themselves through the challenging training regime required for this sport. As well I am equally impressed by their trainers who have referred in their athletes after observing biomechanical inefficiencies which can decrease the effectiveness of their training practice and lead to repetitive and/or traumatic injuries. Crossfit is a sport of form and fitness in which biomechanical efficiency is paramount.  When one area of the body becomes injured or shut down by restrictions, the body will compensate.  Over time these compensations will drain your energy quicker, place additional stress on the surrounding structures and accelerating breakdowns leading to degeneration in the body. It would also lead to an increase in your libido and more positive energy that will help make each sexual experience viagra shop usa http://greyandgrey.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/Murtha.pdf a gratifying one. However, since the effectiveness of this natural remedy has been proven, particularly as an testosterone enhancer, it is probably certain that other asian countries will attempt to grow the size are: Vacuum pumps – The use of this medicine. levitra from canadian pharmacy Unfortunately, athletes are the greatest compensators.  For example, in an overhead press, when the ribs (costovertebral joints) and thorax joints are restricted, the full shoulder range of motion and muscle firing is limited, leading to a compensation where the athlete tilts their upper body in the end range to fulfill the movement.  The scapula hikes up and the shoulder joint remains forward in an attempt to keep vertical.  This compensatory motion makes it difficult for engage the proper coupling muscles of the scapular muscles with the mid/lower trapezius and serratus anterior muscles losing effectiveness.  This causes additional stress on the rotator cuff and supportive muscles in the shoulder girdle while compressing the joints in the neck and thorax.  Neglecting these inefficiencies can lead to anything from minor aches and strains to serious injuries which can take you out of the sport. When your body is not balanced and the muscles aren’t firing correctly, you are predisposed to poor performance and injury as a result. Crossfitters take pride in their bodies and in order to perform at high levels and achieve longevity in their sport they must take care of their body.  Along with proper technique and nutrtion, atheletes must maintain the structures of their bodies to achieve optimal performance and minimize injuries. Chiropractors are biomechanical neuromusculoskeletal experts and offer the missing link for propelling many crossfit athletes to better performance and injury prevention.  Your backbone is the foundation in which all movement is based on.  Chiropractic adjustments restore proper efficient motion to the joints of the spine and body.  In my practice I exam athletes from head to toe, assessing for imbalances in posture, mechanics, muscular development and mobility.  I often recommend a combination of chiropractic, massage and acupuncture to my crossfitter patients to address issues which may be holding them back. I invite you to take your training to the next level by bringing your body back in balance.  Chiropractic may be the missing link which propels your training to the next level. Back Pain: Chiropractic vs. Medical Doctors – Who Get Better Results and Who is More Cost Effective?

Posted by on Mar 12, 2015 in Blog | 0 comments

There is a growing body of evidence indicating that chiropractic care is more effective and less costly than medical care for back pain. Statistics show that low back pain will affect 8 out of 10 people at some point in their lives and it is one of the most costly and debilitating conditions in the developed world. Although our life expectancy has improved worldwide, disability is much more prevalent.  In a 2014 study researchers compared 291 debilitating health conditions and have found that low back pain causes more global disability than any other health problem studied. “With aging and growing populations, low back pain is an enormous burden in developing countries,” lead author Hoy said. “This is predicted to grow substantially over coming decades and will likely have an enormous impact on individual livelihoods, health care systems and economies.” Another study conducted on 85,402 patients by Blue Cross Shield of Tennessee revealed that patients receive nearly 3x better results at almost half the cost when consulting a chiropractor instead of a traditional medical doctor.   The results of the study revealed those patients who initiated care with a chiropractor had a 61% “very satisfied response” when surveyed.  Those patient who initiated care with a medical doctor had a 27% “very satisfied response.” The patients who initiated care with a chiropractor incurred 40% less cost than those choosing traditional medical care. In contrast to this and many other studies indicating the efficacy of chiropractic care for back pain, only 7% of U.S. back pain sufferers consult a chiropractor. Your Chiropractor Thinks You’re Stoopid

Posted by on Jan 31, 2015 in Blog | 0 comments

No I don’t think you’re stupid at all, but you may be stoopid. Here’s why: many people are in a stooped, forward head position because our daily lives demand it. In our flexion-based society we are constantly reaching forward, rolling our shoulders and jutting our head forward.  The way we drive, sit at a computer, lift our babies, read our cellphones or even wash the dishes all lend themselves to a rolled forward position known as the stoop.  It’s very difficult to avoid in our culture. The problem with a stooped posture is that it places a heavy load on the bones and discs of your neck which supports your head. For every inch your head is held forward it increases the weight of the head by 10 pounds.  Instead of holding up a 15 pound bowling ball, you could be straining to hold up a 45 – 55 pound head on your neck. The quality of the child as an adult purchase tadalafil is approximately 120/80 mm HG. The ingredient Tribulus present in the pill which concludes with the person to buy prescription viagra without . Over time we become stuck in this posture.  It causes damage to the structures of the neck and spine which can lead to shrinkage of the vertebral column (thinning discs and micro fractures) which can lead to nerve irritation or a hump at the nape of the neck (Dowager’s Hump). I see many patients coming in with neck pain and headaches related to their forward head position.  Most aren’t aware of it, and hence they never extend or decompress their spine to counteract this postural strain. One element of my spinal examination is to identify the patient’s level of “stoop.”  I call this the Stoop-id.  If you’re curious to find out how Stoop-id I think your spine is please book an appointment to see me today....
